Relative

Today, we’d like to challenge you to write your own poem that recounts a memory of a beloved relative, and something they did that echoes through your thoughts today.

The last time I saw him,
Hospital bound
he asked if I was happy
Calling my name
Meant as an opener to
small talk, a
throwaway phrase
At that late stage,
The small talk was all that
was left to carry us.

Yet, the question taken on its own
has haunted me ever since
Are you happy?
