On the Radio - June 2026
Related to my previous blog post, here are some of the interesting things I heard for the first time on the radio over the past couple of months.
Looking Over from my Hotel Window - Yoko Ono
Age 39, looking over from my hotel window Blue dots and red dots skating away in the park I used to be there twenty years ago Huffing over a mug of hot chocolate drink
Lyrically, this song is very dark, but there is something about the melody and simple production (a piano and some delay) that I liked.
Moussolou - Oumou Sangaré
I heard this on the radio very recently and loved it a lot. To be honest, I don’t know much about or listen to a lot of West African music, but I would love to hear more. If anyone has any recommendations, feel free to reach out!
This song also reminded me of something I had heard and loved years ago. It was from a great series that the website boomkat used to do called “14 tracks”. Anyway, I think one of the series was about Mali and it had this great track.
Whiplash - Asha Sheshadri
This song reminded me a bit of Cocorosie (their first album), in terms of some of the sound effects. The piano and general mood of nostalgia is a bit like Leyland Kirby, and then the vocals reminded me of a lot of great female artists, like Lena Platonos, Julia Holter, and, of course Yoko Ono! But it mostly sounds like its own thing, sounds great.
Veins - Helen Svoboda
Another brand new and very interesting artist for me.
